The Secretary-General of AALCO attended the 2019 Colloquium on International Law in Hong Kong, 15-16 August 2019
H. E. Prof. Dr. Kennedy Gastorn, the Secretary-General of AALCO attended the 2019 Colloquium on International Law jointly organized by the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL) and the Chinese Society of International Law (CSIL) in Hong Kong on 15-16 August 2019. The Colloquium is the flagship event of the AAIL, and this year the third edition of the event was themed “Synergy and Security: The Keys to Sustainable Global Investment”. The welcome addresses were delivered by H.E. Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive, Hong Kong SAR; Dr. Anthony Neoh, Chairman, AAIL; and Professor Huang Jin, President, CSIL.
Secretary-General delivering the Special Address
The Secretary-General Prof. Dr. Kennedy Gastorn and Mr. Xie Feng, Commissioner, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong SAR delivered special addresses at the Colloquium. The Secretary-General, speaking on the topic “Contribution of AALCO to the Development of International Law”, recollected the glorious legacy of the contribution of AALCO to the progressive development of international law, especially the Organization’s active involvement in the drafting of model legal instruments and the impact of such instruments in codification of international law. Mr. Feng delivered a special address on the topic “Get the Fundamentals Right and Safeguard the Rule of Law”, focusing on the non-intervention principle of international law and relating it with the policy of “One Country, Two Systems” practiced in the Hong Kong SAR.
The Sessions at the Colloquium pertained to spurring cross-border trade and investment; the global dimension of dispute resolution; the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and international law; and cyber security. The roles of SEZs and the ongoing tariff war vis-à-vis trade and investment were assessed in the discussions; the latest trends in investment dispute resolution, including in BRI, analyzed; and stocks were taken of the efforts to contain and combat cyber threats.

The Colloquium was attended by more than 200 participants from the legal and business fraternity. Ms. Wang Liyu, the Deputy Secretary-General of AALCO also participated in the event. The participants of the Fifth Training Session of China-AALCO Exchange and Research Programme on International Law attended the Colloquium as well.
